One laptop per Child (OLPC) has announced that it is moving closer to its goal of providing every child in the world with access to knowledge and modern forms of education. OLPC has revealed its roadmap for the creation of three new laptop models that will be released from 2010 through 2012. These computers are set not only to surpass the performance of the current XO but will have lower prices as well.

OLPC is a non-profit organization that aims to make modern forms of education accessible to all children in the world. As such, the XO laptops are designed powerful enough to meet these needs but are also built sturdy and resistant to the humidity and/or heat, which abounds in arid or tropical settlements. As such, the XO 1.5 and XO 1.75 will build upon the current design and will deliver better performance while becoming more accessible to the targeted consumer base. The more remote XO 3.0, however, will use an entirely new design.

The XO 1.5 will be based on the current XO industrial design and will become available by January 10. It will replace the currently used AMD processor with one from VIA and will also boast double the speed and four times more DRAM and FLASH memory. The system will be able to run both the Linux and the Windows operating systems and will cost about $200.


The second model OLPC is designing is the ARM processor-based XO 1.75. This will be more accessible to poor and rural communities, costing at most $175. The ARM chip from Marvell is set to double the processing speed while reducing power consumption to a quarter. The outside will be rubber-bumpered while the inside screen will be an 8.9-inch touch-sensitive display. The XO 1.75 is meant as a complement to the x86-based XO 1.5.

Lastly, OLPC is also working on an entirely new device which, the organization hopes, will cost much less than $100. The developers will focus on a design using a single sheet of flexible plastic. The goal is to create a device completely environment-proof, thanks to the total lack of holes, and will still deliver a performance at least as high as that of the X 1.75 model.

Acer, one of the world's leading vendors of portable computer systems, is expecting to register better notebook shipments in September, with the help of Microsoft's much-anticipated Windows 7 operating system, according to the company's chairman words in a recent news report. JT Wang also explains that notebook shipments are expected to remain flat through July and August.

In a recent news article on Digitimes, Acer's Chairman, JT Wang, has provided an insight into the company's business expectations for the upcoming months, in the notebook market segment. According to Mr. Wang, the market status still remains at low levels in both the European and the US markets, while China is proving to be a segment for Acer. These expectations are largely based on the status of the current global economy, which is said to have hit bottom. It is yet unclear when the market is going to see a complete recovery, Mr. Wang notes.


The report also makes some corrections regarding the company's expectations in the smartphone market, which is a new segment for Acer and where the company will see a strong competition from the already established vendors. According to Mr. Wang, Acer is aiming to break the one-million-unit threshold in 2010, in the smartphone market. This is a more cautious statement, as compared with the one made by Aymar de Lencquesaing, from the company's Smart Handheld Business Group, who recently forecast that the company would ship 2 – 2.5 million smartphones in 2010.

Acer is currently aiming to strengthen its market position in the notebook sector, with the company placing a significant importance on some of today's fast-growing segments, including notebooks and ultrathin portable computer systems. These segments are expected to grow higher in the upcoming months, before the end of the year, as Microsoft is preparing to launch its next-generation operating system, Windows 7.

TT... What's the first thing that comes to mind when seeing these two letters put together? I don't know about you, but in our case, it's without a doubt the famous sports car from Audi, a vehicle most of us have coveted since it first appeared on the market.

The truth of the matter is that the Audi TT is not the only TT out there. And we're not talking about some other car developed by a competitor of the German company, but about something completely different, namely the Vaio TT notebook, one of the most ultra-portable Vaio systems to ever come out of Sony's design labs.

Launched back in the second half of 2008, Sony's Vaio TT has impressed everyone right from the start, due to its minute size (almost as small as some of the larger netbooks currently available on the market), its low weight, its very good level of performance, and, last, but certainly not least, its looks.

In fact, the TT carries on the legacy of stylish notebooks that's common throughout the entire Vaio family portable computing systems, but at the same time manages to keep the whole form factor at a very compact level. However, it does so at a very steep price point, which makes it a suitable solution especially for those people for whom money's not exactly a problem.
The Vaio TT is just the thing to use for working while on the go, but also provides very interesting multimedia playback options, probably the most important being that it's the smallest notebook to incorporate a Blu-ray optical drive, which, coupled with the fact that it also incorporates an HDMI interface, makes it the world's smallest high-definition capable player.

These are just a few introductory words, and it's now about time to start our tour of this very impressive, yet fairly inaccessible device.

HP is set to debut a new version of its ultra-thin, lightweight Pavilion dv2 laptop, featuring an updated dual-core Athlon Neo processor from Sunnyvale, California-based Advanced Micro Devices. The new laptop will allow HP and AMD to better compete in the growing market for ultrathin, ultraportable computer systems, where Intel is also looking
to increase its market share with the help of its CULV platform. Following next week's release of the dual-core Neo processors, AMD is expected to announce the debut of its new 'Congo' low-power silicon later this year.

Intel has been gaining a significant ground in the ultraportable PC market segment, with the chip maker actively promoting its CULV platform. Since its release, a number of system builders have rushed to adopt it, providing consumers with a few interesting designs, such as MSI's X-Slim series and Acer's Timeline family. However, AMD is also on the game of ultraportable, ultrathin laptops, with the launch of its Athlon Neo processors earlier this year.

Back when it was released, the Althon Neo-powered Pavilion dv2 was seen as the next step from netbooks, designed for users looking for an ultraportable PC that could deliver the technical specifications of a fully fledged laptop. Such was the case with the first dv2 laptop from HP, which boasted a 12-inch display, ran on Microsoft's Windows Vista and provided users with ATI graphics, a 320GB hard drive and 4GB of memory. This was a significant upgrade from all those low-power Atom-based systems that were shipped with Windows XP.

The updated version of HP's Pavilion dv2 is expected to provide an increased performance, thanks to the adoption of a dual-core Athlon Neo chip. This new system will be followed by the official release of AMD's anticipated 'Congo' platform, which will integrate the HD3200 graphics chip, another feature that is to raise performance.

It appears that ASUS has at least one Eee PC model that could turn out as a real competitor for the best netbook system in 2009 award. The company has recently released the Eee PC 1000HE, a 10-inch netbook designed to take advantage of the latest netbook-focused Atom processor, the N280. Apparently, it is this exact model that the PC vendor is really confident of, as it has managed to land among the top three most desired gadgets on Amazon.com, with pre-orders increasing by the day. Fortunately, some users will soon be able to get their hands on the new Eee PC model, as some retailer have already listed the product as being available in stock.

Apparently, one of the main attractions of the new Eee PC 1000HE netbook is the fact that it can provide its users with no less than 9.5 hours of battery life, according to ASUS. However, if you aren't confident in the manufacturer's claims, be sure to check out the available reviews out there, most of which are praising the Eee PC, as one of the best netbooks currently on the market. In addition to the impressive battery life, there's one other aspect that makes this Eee PC stand out from the crowd, which is its relatively low price tag, of under $400.

Basically, with the Eee PC 1000HE, which has been built on Intel's latest N280 processor, ASUS managed to up the ante of its Eee PC lineup, after having released a considerable number of netbook models. It's still early to say if this will become the netbook of the year, but the way things are going, ASUS might see an impressive market performance. As a reminder, the Eee PC 1000HE features a 10-inch LED Backlight WSVGA screen, 1GB of DDR2 memory, 160GB HDD, 802.11 b/g/n wireless networking, 1.3MP webcam, high-definition codec, stereo speakers and a weight of 1.45kg.

After a series of rumors, Fujitsu is reported to have finally decided to sell its hard disk drive business to Toshiba. The news comes after Fujitsu announced on Wednesday that it would discontinue its hard disk drive head business on March 31, 2009, as part of a broader restructuring plan. This could mean that, according to available details, Toshiba has bought only a part of Fujitsu's HDD business, more specifically the one that doesn't include the HDD head manufacturing part.

Earlier this week, Fujitsu announced that it would close its HDD head manufacturing operations performed at the Nagano Plant. As a result, the company will have to reassign 360 employees, currently working at the site, to other operations within the Fujitsu Group. Aside from HDD head manufacturing, the Nagano Plant also deals with the manufacturing of printed circuit boards designed for servers and telecommunications equipment. These operations are expected to continue at the plant, after March 31. Fujitsu also said that it would take a charge of $56 million in relation to the transition of the 360 employees, a figure that would be attributed to the company's final 2008 quarter.

Currently, Fujitsu hard drive manufacturing operations include facilities in the Philippines and Thailand. According to The Register, the company's Yamagata drive media plant isn't going to be part of the deal with Toshiba, leaving only the sites in Philippines and Thailand. However, there are rumors according to which Toshiba doesn't require the manufacturing operation in Thailand, meaning that approximately 7000 jobs could be cut.

The official selling price is yet to be unveiled, but according to reports, that number could be in the area of 30 to 40 billion yen, or approximately $340m to $450m. The transaction is expected to provide Toshiba with a profitable business, also enabling the company, which is currently the fifth largest vendor of HDDs, to gain a better market share.

Back in mid-2008, the media was ablaze at the news that somewhere in India people were developing a portable computer system designed for educational purposes, which would carry out a price tag of only $10. The project was immediately put under scrutiny, especially given the astonishing low price of said laptop. However, the information was later corrected with the price point being raised to a more resonable $100.
On that note, news reports from India appear to confirm that the aforementioned system is going to debut sometime next month,
with the price tag being set at just Rs500.

Currently there are few details on the respective lappy, but according to the online edition of “The Times of India” the Rs500 laptop will be on display in Tirupati on February 3, in time for the launch of the National Mission on Education through Information and Communication Technology. The system, which is said to be a response to the $100 laptop promoted by MIT's Nicholas Negroponte, is expected to come with 2GB of RAM memory. Unfortunately, there are few technical details to go on for the time being, though we should know more by the end of next week.


“A lot of testing is being done to ensure the technology works properly. The computer can be an ideal gift for children,” said higher education secretary RP Aggarwal. “At this stage, the price is working out to be $20 but with mass production it is bound to come down.”

Given the skepticism around the project, the effort is applaudable. A low-cost computer system that could be used for educational purposes could potentially change the computer system market, consequently allowing pupils in the lower-developed countries to benefit from the advancements in the computer technology field. The system could have a competitor in the form of the upcoming XO 2 laptop, designed by the One Laptop Per Child project.

Super Talent, one of the world's leading manufacturers of Flash-based storage solutions and DRAM memory modules, announced today a new Solid State Drive, coming to provide support for ASUS' stylish and slim Eee PC S101 netbook PC. The new SSD has been specifically built as an alternative storage upgrade for the high-end version of ASUS’ Eee PC lineup, the Atom-powered S101.

With the announcement, Super Talent provided three new models of its new SSD product, with capacities of 16GB, 32GB and 64GB, all of which have been designed to provide the same performance specifications. According to Super Talent, these SSDs have a maximum read and write speed of 90MB/s and 55MB/s, respectively. Due to the maximum storage capacity that these SSDs can provide, users of the ASUS S101 netbook will be provided with a reliable storage upgrade.

“You can never have enough storage space. This is sure to be a popular upgrade for the S101,” said Joe James, Super Talent’s director of marketing.

ASUS' Eee PC S101 netbook can provide users with 16GB of storage space, for the Windows XP model, which is why Super Talent's offer couldn't be more welcomed. For a price tag of approximately $169, users can take advantage of 65GB of storage space, a feature that will likely boost the system's performance and total storage. ASUS provides a 64GB SSD option for the Linux-enabled versions of the aforementioned netbook.

The increasing popularity of these small-size, low-power computer systems, better known as netbooks, is expected to also boost the adoption rate of the Flash-based SSDs. This storage solution is expected to become a standard that will follow current traditional drives, as they can provide an enhanced performance level as well as a quieter working environment, when compared to hard drives that use moving parts.

NVIDIA's CEO, Mr. Jen-Hsun Huang, has recently talked about some of the new technologies that have emerged in the computer system market, including Intel's Atom, VIA's Nano and NVIDIA's very own Ion platform. In a more extensive interview with Laptop Magazine, Mr. Huang talks about the future of the portable PC market and how he sees the Ion platform providing users with an impressive product, when compared to Intel's own Atom and integrated graphics solution, featured in almost every netbook and nettop currently available on the market.

According to Huang, the Atom processor, which was launched almost a year ago, could really take netbooks to a whole new level, when coupled with NVIDIA's GeForce 9400M chip solution, also known as the Ion platform. The combination of the two will provide the end user with a product that offers a premium PC experience, within a package that shouldn't cost more than $399. Unfortunately, NVIDIA's CEO refused to detail any specific release date for an Ion-based device, citing support for the company's customers.

In regard to rumors claiming that Intel is forcing system makers to buy Atom alongside the Intel chipset, consequently eliminating NVIDIA's chipset from the equation, Mr. Hung said, “I would hope that Intel isn’t doing anything to prevent consumers from getting the most innovative products, in this case, built around Atom, their own processor. I think consumers would be really disappointed if they learned that Intel is sabotaging their ability to get access to breakthrough technologies.” He also added that he “would be disappointed to learn that Intel is doing something to keep innovation from progressing, and keep end users from getting the best products out there.”

Mr. Huang also talks about one of the main competitors of Intel's Atom processor, namely VIA's Nano CPU, which he claims to be a “fabulous processor.” According to him, NVIDIA is planning to release an Ion platform that will support VIA's Nano in the future. “In the near future we’ll support it with our Ion platform as well. Not this particular Ion platform, but our next-generation Ion platform. At that point we’ll support Atoms, Celerons, Core 2 duos, Nanos. We want to support as many processors as we can.”

MSI is expected to further expand its lineup of X-Slim portable computer systems with the addition of a new Pentium-powered model that will allow the motherboard maker to better compete with Apple's ultra-thin MacBook Air. The company is said to be developing an upgraded version of the X320 netbook, which has been showcased at the International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, Nevada, last week.
The new model is expected to cost over $1000, but the exact price tag is yet to be unveiled, when the company officially launches the new model.

MSI introduced its first ultra-portable, thin laptop at CES in Las Vegas, as part of its new X-Slim series of portable computer systems. The showcased model was based on a 1.33GHz Intel Z530 Atom microprocessor and was featured with a 13.4-inch screen. The entire system is said to weigh just 1.3Kg, close to the weight of some netbooks currently available on the market.

The Atom-based X320 netbook is expected to come out with a price tag lower than US$1000, as it will probably target the high-end netbook market, which is where it will compete with ASUS' sleek S101 netbook. A Pentium-powered X-Slim laptop is expected to cost over US$1000, according to Vincent Sung, assistant vice president of notebook research and development at MSI. However, the higher price tag will enable MSI's X-Slim laptop to better compete with Apple's MacBook Air.

MSI went further with the design of its new X-Slim X320 laptop, offering a portable computer system that is only 1.98-centimeters at its thickest point. It can offer a choice of batteries, ranging from a 4-cell to an 8-cell one, which can provide the netbook with up to 10-hours of run time.

Details on when MSI will launch its new Pentium-powered X-Slim laptops are yet to become available.

Acer, the world's third largest PC company, has just announced two new notebook computer systems, as part of its TravelMate lineup, designed for mobile professional users. The company's new models, dubbed TravelMate 6593 and TravelMate 6493, are now available in the U.S. commercial channel and are designed to provide a robust, secure and powerful PC solution, ready to meet the requirements of the corporate and small-to-medium business users.

Acer's new portable computer systems, designed for mobile professionals, have been built as a 15.4-inch and a 14.1-inch solution, incorporating some of the latest computer hardware components on the market. Both systems have been featured with Intel's latest Centrino 2 mobile platform and boast an integrated Intel 3D Graphics Media Accelerator X4500MHD.

The 15.1-inch TravelMate 6593 has been featured with Intel's Core 2 Duo T9500 processor, clocked at 2.53GHz. Equipped with 4GB of DDR3 1066Mhz dual channel memory and a 250GB 7200RPM SATA hard drive, the TravelMate 6593 is capable of providing an optimum Windows Vista experience. In addition, the TravelMate 6593 comes with a DVD-Super Multi Double-Layer optical drive, 5-in-1 card reader, wireless 802.11 a/b/g/n connectivity and an Acer Crystal Eye Webcam.


Acer's new 14.1-inch TravelMate 6493, also built on the Centrino 2 platform, is featured with the Intel Core 2 Duo T8400 processor, running at 2.53GHz. The system is equipped with 3GB of DDR3 memory, and packs 250GB of storage spaceon 7200RPM SATA hard drive. Aside from that, the 14.1-inch model is pretty similar to the larger 15.4-inch TravelMate 6593.

In addition, the company said that its new TravelMate notebooks can be incorporated with the Acer ezDock II and ezDock II+ docking stations. The notebooks will become available, along with the ezDock II and ezDock II+ dock stations, through Acer's authorized resellers, with the TravelMate 6593 coming with an MSRP of $1499, while the TravelMate 6493 comes at $1099-$1299.
