Microsoft will make available the next update to the service it has built around its Xbox console, come next week. Larry Hryb, the director of programming for the Microsoft gaming network Xbox Live, revealed that the Redmond company would offer all members of the Xbox LIVE community the latest refresh to the service starting with November 17, 2009. At the time of this article, the Xbox LIVE update has been already offered to a select pool of testers. However, it appears that Microsoft’s Preview Program for the upcoming Xbox LIVE Update will soon be shut down, as the company will start delivering the fully-fledged refresh.

“I know some of you are already enjoying many of these features through the Preview Program, but I am happy to announce that the next update that contains Facebook, Twitter, Last.fm and Zune video will be available to all Xbox LIVE members launch Nov. 17,” Hryb noted.

When it comes to the Windows LIVE update there are a few things that Xbox console users need to be aware of. First off, the refresh is designed to kill unauthorized memory units. The Redmond company made it clear in October, when it debuted the Preview Program, that it would tackle the usage of unauthorized memory units with Xbox 360 consoles.

In addition, not all users will be free to enjoy the new enhanced social networking capabilities of Xbox LIVE. Testers that have been running the public preview and that were younger than 18 were cut off from accessing Twitter, Facebook, or Last.fm. This situation will not change after Microsoft will release the fully-fledged update.

“We made this decision because as it stands now, parents aren’t able to use Family Settings to customize which of these applications their children can access. In order to offer an age-appropriate environment for everyone, we decided to turn off these applications for those Gold members under the age of 18. As expected, this has been a hot topic with the preview users. We want to make sure everyone was aware, however, that the development team is working on an update that gives parents the choice of which social applications their children can access. This means that Xbox LIVE members between the ages of 13 and 17 will be able to use Facebook, Twitter and Last.fm as long as their parents approve,” Hryb added.

Microsoft’s Simon Aldous has been talking through his hat, the Windows maker claims, when the company's partner group manager stated that Microsoft tried to “create a Mac look and feel in terms of graphics” for Windows 7. As reports circulating on the Internet say, Aldous appeared to admit that Microsoft had looked at Mac OS X for inspiration. Microsoft vehemently denies this.

Via Neowin, the full quote from the respective interview has been reproduced below. One of the things that people say an awful lot about the Apple Mac is that the OS is fantastic, that it's very graphical and easy to use. What we've tried to do with Windows 7 – whether it's traditional format or in a touch format – is create a Mac look and feel in terms of graphics. We've significantly improved the graphical user interface, but it's built on that very stable core Vista technology, which is far more stable than the current Mac platform, for instance.

As the same report reveals, the people in Redmond immediately issued a counter-statement revealing that Aldous' comments were not only “inaccurate,” but downright “uninformed.” In a post on the Windows Team blog, Microsoft blogger Brandon LeBlanc stated the following:

An inaccurate quote has been floating around the Internet today about the design origins of Windows 7 and whether its look and feel was “borrowed” from Mac OS X. Unfortunately this came from a Microsoft employee who was not involved in any aspect of designing Windows 7. I hate to say this about one of our own, but his comments were inaccurate and uninformed.

While Microsoft cannot possibly admit Windows 7 mimics Mac OS X, the Redmond giant can’t hide the obvious – a great deal of people (and vocal ones, may we add) have given their verdict: Windows 7 does look like Mac OS X from quite a few perspectives. However, as this editor has stressed over and over again, there is a thin line between copying a product and using universally intuitive solutions for graphics, functionality, etc. There’s a limit to how much things can be changed just to be different from each other, yet still work for the customer. Do share your own opinion in the comments.

Microsoft is not only hard at work cooking the next iteration of the Office System for Windows users, but also the next version of Office for Mac. In this regard, the Redmond-based company has announced that the successor of Office 2008 for Mac will be offered to customers next year, ahead of the holiday season. Office 2010 for Windows is also planned for release in 2010, however, ahead of the general availability of the next iteration of Office for Mac, namely in the first half of the coming year. With the successor of Office 2008 for Mac, Microsoft will kill the Entourage for Mac email client, which will be replaced with Outlook for Mac.

“It is an exciting time for the MacBU [Microsoft’s Macintosh Business Unit] with updates to our current products and the first public announcement about the next version of Office for Mac. For several years we have focused on providing the best Microsoft Exchange client for the Mac, and the Web Services Edition delivers that today for Entourage users,” revealed Eric Wilfrid, general manager for the MacBU at Microsoft. “Outlook for Mac will bring features our customers have long requested — such as Information Rights Management — that make working across platforms even easier. I think people will see that this move to Outlook for Mac is more than just a name change.”

In a move designed to simplify the Office for Mac SKU lineup, MacBU informed that it would introduce the Office 2008 for Mac Business Edition on top of the current offering of Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac Home and Student Edition. The software giant explained that Office 2008 for Mac Business Edition would be available for purchase come September 15, 2009, with customers being able to pre-order it on August 18. The new SKU will cost $399.95 and $239.95 for Version Upgrade. For current Entourage users, the Redmond-based company is already offering Microsoft Entourage 2008 for Mac, Web Services Edition today.

“Microsoft Outlook and Exchange Server have been a cornerstone of communications and collaboration for our enterprise customers,” added Takeshi Numoto, corporate vice president of the Office product management group at Microsoft. “Today’s release of the Web Services Edition strengthens Exchange connectivity for Entourage customers and sets the stage for the move to the new application — Outlook for Mac. These updates continue Microsoft and the MacBU’s tradition of delivering the most complete solution to help customers manage their time, and better share their information and collaborate with others.”

IBM has just announced a new solution designed to help business customers reduce their costs by turning to the company's latest version of Lotus Symphony, a productivity suite designed as an alternative to Microsoft's Office. According to IBM, customers could save up to hundreds of dollars on each of their Microsoft Office licenses with the help of the new Lotus Symphony version 1.3, which can be easily downloaded,
free of charge from one of the company's web pages. The Lotus Symphony will provide users with support for their current Microsoft Office 2007 documents, which can be accessed through IBM's ODF-based solution.

“IBM is delivering on its commitment to free businesses and consumers from having to pay licensing fees over and over just to access their own personal or company information,” said Kevin Cavanaugh, VP of Lotus Software. “Now, it will be much harder to justify paying Office licensing fees when you can preserve and access your Office documents for free using Lotus Symphony”

With the release of the new Lotus Symphony productivity suite, IBM is trying to provide its clients with an alternative to Microsoft's highly successful Office suite. According to the Armonk, New York-based company, this new solution could translate into millions of dollars in savings at many large enterprises looking for a way to reduce costs during an ongoing low market economy.

The latest version also adds up a couple of new features, including the possibility for users to drag-and-drop plug-ins, consequently extending the use of Symphony to other business applications. The suite also adds support for Microsoft's Office 2007 file formats and provides animation for presentations that can interoperate with Microsoft's PowerPoint presentations.

IBM's new Symphony Lotus productivity suite is already available for download via this web page, providing users with a free-of-charge alternative to Microsoft's Windows Office.

Microsoft is offering users a chance to win a free copy of Windows 7 Ultimate as well as a Windows 7 T-shirt. Stephen L Rose, Sr community manager, Windows IT Pro Client, revealed that all that users needed to do was to fill out a short survey. The Redmond company has already put
up the IT Pro Internet Habits – IT Pro Internet Browsing Survey, which can be accessed through this link. As the label of the survey indicates, the software giant aims to receive feedback on the browsing habits of respondents.

After answering the seven simple questions, users will be granted a chance to win a free Ultimate SKU of Windows 7 and a T-shirt to go along with it. Microsoft has not indicated any sort of participation limitations at this point in time. Moreover, users who want to take the survey will need to fill in their email address and their country of residence, suggesting that the initiative is valid worldwide.

Essentially the survey is designed to provide Microsoft with an insight on the number of computers participants use, their preferred browser, as well on how they manage anonymous Internet browsing, and the deletion of cache and history data.

Microsoft is gearing up to make Windows 7 available to the public on October 22, 2009. The Redmond company confirmed the general availability deadline officially, and indicated that Windows 7, just as Windows Vista, would be launched globally. Ahead of GA, the software giant is preparing to wrap up the next iteration of the Windows client come next month. Windows 7 will be released to manufacturing in the second half of July 2009. However, Microsoft has already started planning details of the Windows 7 launch with its partners, both from the retail and the OEM channels.

Google Goes Against Microsoft

Posted by Tech | 11:52 AM |

Google has made yet another step designed to threaten the dominance of Microsoft when it comes down to the market of productivity applications with its Office System. With the Reseller Program for Google Apps, the Mountain View-based search giant is looking to attract the interest of technology solution providers to take Google Apps to businesses around the world. Via the new channel program, resellers are offered the option to not only sell seats of Google Apps Premier Edition, but also customize and support Google's in-the-Cloud equivalent to Microsoft's Office.

"Google Apps has reached a level of maturity where it is useful and valuable for almost any business" Dave Girouard, president of Enterprise, Google, explained. "This program gives IT solution providers an easy way to introduce cloud computing to their service offerings, while helping more businesses make the transition to this new era of technology."

Google Apps Premier Edition is a collection of communication and collaboration solutions hosted entirely in the Cloud by Google. The Mountain View company informed that business customers would be able to benefit from Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Docs, Google Sites, Google Talk, and Google Video either directly, or through resellers.

Up to this point in time, Google has managed to roll out no less than 50 pilot partners and have the suite adopted by over 1 million businesses and over 10 million users. Resellers will get 20% discounts for each seat of Google Apps Premier Edition deployed.

"We believe strongly that all companies will adopt SaaS to one degree oranother, and Google's reseller program empowers us to be experts in the cloud," Tony Safoian, president of IT firm SADA Systems Inc, added. "Reselling Google Apps opens up new opportunities via new conversations we could not have had with prospective clients as little as two years ago. What Google Apps offers – if you take into consideration the pace of innovation, the collaboration tools, and the built-in disaster recovery – is not available anywhere else at any price; when you add that our clients can save 75% of costs versus doing this all on-premise, it is often an easy sell."

After IBM indicated that it was eroding Microsoft's market share on the unified communications and collaboration software market the past week, the Redmond company came out gunning in an attempt to set the record straight. The software giant disputed claims that IBM's solutions were stealing business users away from it, and indicated that, to the contrary, it had won over 10 million customers who were running Lotus Notes, converting them to Microsoft Exchange and SharePoint.

“The number of customers who are choosing Microsoft’s solutions for unified communications and collaboration is at an all-time high. More than 10 million users are making the switch from Lotus Notes and Domino to Exchange and SharePoint, including more than two million in the last six months alone,” David Scult, general manager of field and partner in the Information Worker Division at Microsoft, explained.

IBM applauded reaching the 145 million sold Lotus Notes licenses worldwide, by revealing that customers were giving up Microsoft licenses and adopting Lotus collaboration software instead. According to IBM, in the 15 months ahead of Q3 2008, over 12,000 new companies acquired Notes/Domino licenses for the first time, at the expense of Microsoft, emphasizing that more than 50% of America's top 100 companies were running its solutions. IBM claimed that various companies that were considering adopting Microsoft Exchange had changed their mind.

Microsoft denied such a scenario, and underlined that Exchange owned no less than 65% of the messaging market, according to data via a Ferris Research survey, while Notes/Domino's share was just 10%. However, Scult did admit that IBM solutions were run by 50% of the Fortune 100 companies, but indicated that, in that case, IBM actually lost market share to Microsoft.

“Lotus Notes was once in at least 67 percent of the Fortune 100 companies, so in that context, 50 percent now isn’t terribly impressive. But, yes, the figure is likely true. Because of the proprietary code in some Lotus Notes databases, some customers keep Lotus Notes around for these legacy applications, but they don’t use it as their primary messaging or collaboration applications. So, technically, these customers may be using both IBM and Microsoft platforms, but in reality 80 percent of most of the Fortune 100 have moved or are moving to Microsoft Exchange as their primary messaging application and SharePoint for their primary collaboration needs,” Scult added.

At the end of the past year, with Windows 7 Beta 1 wrapped up since mid-December, and Build 6.1.7000.0.081212-1400 leaked to BitTorrent websites, the obvious question was where was Microsoft going next with Windows 7? The answer, at least feature-wise, is not that far from the Beta. However, a representative of the Redmond company did confirm that there were secret features hidden inside Windows 7, even as the next iteration of the Windows client was in Beta stage, features that would be brought to the surface at an unspecified time in the future.

Following the public availability of Windows 7 Beta 1 Build 7000 downloads on January 10, 2009, I contacted Microsoft and asked them to confirm that the release was feature-complete, just as Steven Sinofsky, senior vice president, Windows and Windows Live Engineering Group, announced at the end of October and the start of November in 2008.

A representative of the software giant mentioned that no additional features would be added to Windows 7 past the Beta stage, but that users were bound to have a few surprises coming their way. “Windows 7 Beta is feature complete, however, we are keeping a few features back and will disclose them at a later date,” a Microsoft spokesperson revealed exclusively.

“The core development of Windows 7 is broken up into four dev milestones, M1, M2, M3, and beta. The pre-beta build is just our M3 build, it's the one that meets our exit criteria on feature completeness, performance,” Sinofsky stated at the Professional Developers Conference in Los Angeles, on October 28. “It's not feature complete yet. In fact, much of the user interface work, which of course is at the top of the stack and the last part to come in, will be complete when we get to beta.

“The next step is the beta. The beta is going to be feature complete. It's going to be pretty good. It's not going to be final. It's going to be a beta. So, we're still not ready for performance benchmarking. We're still not ready to try out how every single edge case works, but it is the complete product as we envision it,” Sinofsky added at PDC 2008. (emphasis added)

Then, on November 5, 2008, the same Sinofsky, but this time at the Windows Hardware Engineering Conference (WinHEC 2008), explained that “The [Windows 7] beta is going to be on that's going to go out very broadly, and we're going to get that done early in the next year, and that really will be feature complete.” (emphasis added)

It appears that with the next development milestones of Windows 7, Microsoft is adopting a strategy similar to what it did with the M3 pre-beta release, namely locking some features of the operating system from its users. In this regard, Windows 7 pre-Beta M3 did not allow user access by default to Aero Peek, Aero Snaps, the new Taskbar (the Superbar), JumpLists, Aero Shake, etc. The company, of course, did not offer any indication as to what additional features it had hidden in Windows 7, on top of those enumerated here that have been offered in the Beta build, or when it planned to bring them to the surface.

Microsoft releases first iPhone app

Posted by Tech | 5:13 AM |

Engineers in Microsoft's Live Labs have released the company's first application for Apple's popular smartphone - even before making it available on Microsoft's own mobile platform.

Seadragon Mobile, which was added to Apple's App Store on Saturday, is a free image-browsing app that allows users to quickly "deep zoom" images while online and is intended to demonstrate what is possible with a mobile platform. Seadragon is the backbone for Microsoft's Photosynth, which allows users to take a grouping of photographs and stitch them together into a faux 3D environment.

Other iPhone apps are reportedly in development in Redmond; Microsoft's Tellme unit was expected to release the company's first iPhone app in the form of a voice-activated search for a variety of phones, including iPhone and BlackBerry. A Microsoft representative told silicon.com sister site CNET News.com in September that a public version of that program would likely be released in a few months.

So where's the Windows Mobile version of Seadragon?

Alex Daley, group product manager for Microsoft Live Labs, told TechFlash: "The iPhone is the most widely distributed phone with a [graphics processing unit]. Most phones out today don't have accelerated graphics in them. The iPhone does and so it enabled us to do something that has been previously difficult to do."

We shed light on Microsoft’s first Live deal with Blackberry maker Research in Motion back in mid May. At the time, both had partnered to deliver Live Messenger and Live Hotmail to smartphone owners held within RIM’s embrace. Today the companies have announced a kind of extension to the contract to involve Live Search among some of the mobile applications present on the devices, including Blackberry Browser and Blackberry Maps.

As with the companies’ previous agreement, the Live Search functions won’t be immediately present on Blackberry devices. “Available later this year,” is RIM’s estimation. Similarly, Live Hotmail and Live Messenger were at first mention said to be ready for a rollout in summer. That was before summer had arrived. Nevertheless, the Live Search feature is perhaps the most essential component to add to its partnership with RIM, as it is mobile search that is, particularly in location-sensitive scenarios, seen to be increasingly valuable. Microsoft’s primary target in the search space, Google, has made no secret of its desire to tap the advertising potential made possible with the increased ubiquity of small screens in consumers’ hands.

Of course, it has traditionally been the case that the Blackberry is the domain of business, which alone perhaps makes this arrangement among tech giants not so very impactful. Yet it clearly is the consumer that is in the sights of RIM with recent design releases like the Pearl, the Curve, the Bold, the newly announced Pearl Flip, and the much-anticipated “Thunder.” The advent of premium hardware from the likes of Nokia and Apple have only served to spur RIM in their direction. And so the financial incentive for RIM to sign with Microsoft - and vice versa - only grows with time. Today’s mention of the Live Search agreement also notes, as with the other services of Microsoft origin, multiple language support will be provided
